year in review

in 2009 we: played in the snow, reminisced, made wreaths, soaked up sunshine, watched things grow, b made benches, watched squirrels, b made amazing chairs, took pictures, flew kits, hugged, started siding, watched storms, created, crafted, had quality doggy time, met some kittens, gained a desk, gained a lucy, rode bikes, had lots of porch time, made over the computer room, explored, ethan turned 2, sold crafts, rode more bikes, enjoyed fall, drank lots of coffee, made more stuff, gained a craft room, accomplished a giant brick wall, and survived christmas.

mug monday!

meet my husband bradley! he is twisting the stash of my mug of the week. i have no idea where this mug came from, but apparently it belonged to someone left handed.

i'd like to give props to my friend jennifer and her etsy shop, craftstatic. we met when we were 9 years old, which i'm realizing has been 20 years, and now we live about two blocks away from each other. i'm very proud of her for getting her shop up and running and i love that we both have been having so much fun creating things. she is very inspired by the holidays, and has some great christmas items up right now.

like this awesome ornament that she put like a thousand hours into:

and this adorable elf wreath:

these cupcakes ornaments sold quickly, but you should send her a message and tell her to make some more delicous felt crafts!

so, take a minute to check out her shop and say hello!

new brooches

i highly underestimated how well things would be selling around the holidays. i figured things would pick up, but i definitely needed like a thousand more items in my shop. next year i will start preparing in like the middle of june.

i did get a few more brooches finished and listed today, but there probably won't be many more things listed before christmas. take a look!

Tuesday, December 8

finally scored a treasury today! i've had these holiday goodies picked out for at least a month.

button mother load

last night while visiting with my ma, she pulls out this giant cookie tin that weighed like a thousand pounds and told me to open it. inside was the holy grail of vintage buttons. apparently they are my grandma's and great grandma's buttons that my mom didn't even know she had. they were tucked away in a cabinet that came from my grandma's.

we dug through the tin for a while and i picked out a little pile that i couldn't leave without. i didn't want to take too many, but i have a feeling i'll be back for another stash. i can't tell you how excited i am to use these! they are so beautiful and such great motivation to get to work on some new things!

mug monday!

today's mug was a gift from bradley last christmas, and it should have been my first mug monday because it's the most awesome mug on planet earth. it's similar to the holkham owl mug made in england, but this one has a face and was made in portugal. it's been on the mug shelf looking pretty, but i've never actually used it until today. it's definitely going to live in the cabinet from now on so we can use it!

necktie love

old neckties are one of my favorite materials to craft with. first of all, you get the most amazing prints and colors, and people are pretty much throwing them away.. so they're usually cheap and accessible. i've used them for wrist cuffs, brooches, wreaths, and headbands and i dug around etsy to find some other unique ways people have given new life to old ties.

The O'Sullivan Sisters

My husband and I bought our house 4 years ago, and we occasionally get sucked into researching it's history. It's been a dream to find old photos of our home, and we get really excited when we start renovating a room hoping we'll find a new clue to the past.

During a trip to the library while looking through books on our town's history, I flipped through and saw the most amazing picture.. four ladies in 1900's dresses smiling and playing with a little black kitten. I loved it immediately. The caption named them the O'Sullivan sisters, with no other information. It was after I was already attached to the photo that we realized that a family by that name had lived here from around 1909 to 1917 and it took some time to trace the family and find out that they did indeed have daughters. Amanda, Pearl, Lilian, and Lizzy. We also contacted a family that had lived here in the 70's and they told us they had found old leather postcards in the walls during a renovation from one Amanda O'Sullivan!

Wether the photo was taken here is still up for debate, but It's clear that this family is a part of the history of our home, and we finally filled in a little gap in the timeline. We're still on the hunt and I can't wait to discover more!

my little centerpeice tree made it into the holiday home decor gift guide, and my snowflake wreath is featured in etsy finds: the decemberists.

and i'm going to pretend that there are 31 days in november because today i sold the 2 items i needed to reach my goal of 30 in one month! definitely the best etsy month for me ever.

wishing many sales to everyone!

scrooge mcdowell

i'm not a complete scrooge. there are some things i enjoy about the holidays.. like vintage christmas decor, and um.. food, but mostly i just like when it's all over with and life goes back to normal. i blame almost all of my grumpy holiday spirit on working retail since the dawn of time. i'd probably love this time of the year if it meant a nice little break from work, instead of working more. i'd like it more if i weren't a part of the christmas machine. instead of having warm thoughts about family and gift giving, i think about people maxing out credit cards and buying mountains of gifts they can't afford.

i avoid christmas sales, and pretty much shopping all together, and i would rather put my hand in a blender than experience a black friday sale. this time of year i pretty much just lay low and wait for it all to blow over. selling on etsy has been the only things to spark a little flame into my cold grinchy heart. this is my first christmas season for selling, so maybe in a few years i'll be a bright ball of holiday cheer. you never know :)

here is my thanksgiving gift to all of you. enjoy and have a lovely holiday!

Sunday, November 22

how awesome is this!

one of my earliest etsy sales was a customer who wanted me to ship a wreath with a little owl on it to a friend in finland. i was so excited that a little wreath of mine was go to a new home so far away! the girl who bought it said she'd send me a picture of it in it's new place.. i never really expected to get a picture, but today, about 9 months later, i check etsy and i have a conversation with this picture attached:

i love the fact that most people would have probably forgot they ever offered to send a picture, especially after months have gone by.. but she totally delivered. i remember shipping this wreath out vividly, because i highly underestimated the cost to ship to finland, and i ended up making zero dollars on the sale.. lesson learned. but in the end, it was totally worth it!

i love wrapping up my packages to mail out. a while back i scored this giant roll of woodgrain wallpaper, and i have been using it ever since. i'm hoping that it's an endless roll that will never run out because i love it so much. after wrapping up a wreath in the photo above, i loved how it looked like it was packaged in 1974. now i'm going to pretend that i send my packages from the past, and they get lost in the mail for 35 years, before arriving at their destination.

Saturday, November 21

okay, one more!

i hope to post other things besides my new items for sale, but i've been in bust-ass mode lately to get new things finished in time for holiday shopping.. so that's sort of what's on my mind right now.

i squeezed in finishing one more little wreath before it got too dark outside to take pictures. this might be my favorite wreath ever, which turned out to surprise me. it's so thanksgiving and it makes me feel warm and full of mashed potatoes on the inside. mmmm.

woodland yarn wreath

finally got a little bit of sunshine today so i could take some pictures of my brand new wreath! it's a little homage to wintery woodland creatures and i love how it turned out!

see the listing here!

Monday, November 16

squirrel love

there are so many great squirrel items on etsy.. it was hard to pick just a few! bradley and i could watch squirrels play all day, but unfortunately we have to watch from a distance, as our house is a squirrel free zone due to our furry defense system named jeebus. he's quite the killer, so the creatures know to stay away.

1. Belchick - the mischievous squirrel from sleepy king
2. blue squirrel print from orange willow
3. nutty pal covered dish from enamor
4. hungry squirrels also from enamor
5. squirrel love pillow from needlings
6. i'm nuts for you greeting card from echarrow

sneak peek

i have two days off work, so i'm counting on getting lots of new stuff made. i will lock myself in my craft room until it happens! i did get a couple of things started that i'm kind of excited about, so here's a peek. hopefully they'll be finished and listed tomorrow!

some holiday decor inspired by vintage christmas.

four new brooches so far

Monday, November 9

i used to do mug monday on flickr a while back, where every monday i feature a new mug in my ridiculous, ever growing collection of things to drink coffee out of. it fell off after a while, and it seems like a good time to revive it since things are getting icky outdoors. hopefully this will keep me from getting sad about not taking as many pictures outside.

this is the mug i used last night while crafting. i have quite a few grandma mugs, but this is a favorite because of how hilarious the word "marvelous" is, especially when applied to grandmas.

nothing motivates me more than getting sales! the past few days have been a welcome change to the selling slump i had been in lately!

craft room makeover!

i've been so excited to share pictures of my workspace since it's had a little makeover. it's so organized and it makes creating flow so much better when everything is in it's place. click on the photo for a larger view!

this is my main work area. the little bins hold the majority of my crafty supplies, and the desk is stuffed full of finished wreaths. i also use this area for my shipping supplies.

i store all of my fabric inside the red pie safe to the left, left to me from my grandma.

this is my sewing desk, and the place where i take most of my etsy pictures because i can lift the curtains up and i get great lighting!

my hippo pin cushion and a little army of creatures waiting for their turn to be used in a project!

new wreath for winter

most of the time i'm kind of a scrooge and i don't get into christmas much, but lately i have been inspired to make some holiday goodies. i dig stuff that doesn't look like traditional christmas.

i wanted to make a new wreath that was perfect for winter, with an icy silver feel and i love how it turned out!

i did not plan on liking the movie UP as much as i did, but it happened. i'm usually a fan of being firmly on the ground, but here are some etsy finds that will get you lifted.
